Wilderness of Whirling Winds- poem by bayo akinloye

In ANYTHING on September 20, 2011 at 11:28 am

I’m the Voice

imagery of a lone voice
in the jarring symphony
of loneliness

in the wilderness
of whirling winds of indifference

i am the voice
languid and frigid
lonely and oddly
till i find you

impressing on the sand of time

the footprints of our togetherness…

Tecno T9 Handset: Smart and Sexy

In ANYTHING on September 20, 2011 at 11:07 am

A Smartphone That Comes Cheap and Solid

T9 is a touchscreen handset with a swag at a cheap price but with solid features. It has a lost phone tracking ability, threaded SMS, multiple 3 wallpaper skins for customization with widgets, and is pre-loaded with internet settings of most African mobile networks, including  MTNN and Airtel NG.

It comes with a few apps – Snaptu, Opera Mini 4.2, MSN chat, Yahoo Messenger, a bible, mMail and a Skype app (which I think is a senseless move, as the phone is not a 3G phone, but has only GPRS/EDGE).

The music platform is powerful, with so much graphics display, you just want to be looking at it. Once you add music files to the music folder, it autoupdates. The 3.5 mm audio jack allows me to play my favourite tracks through my car audio system.

It has a 3 megapixel camera, with a photo editing suite. You can remove redeye and put captions on the picture being edited. You can import clip arts from the internet to the clip art folder; with push email capabilities

It is also a java phone, though certain java apps would not launch. An attempt to install lots of java apps on the phone causes it to freeze and black.

The T9 phone’s menu has two interfaces. You have to swipe to slide out the second one. Another unique feature of the cell phone is its two charger ports – one via USB and the other a Nokia-like pin charger port. This translates to never being stranded when it comes to charging.

This phone can be used as a modem. Also, just plugging in the USB cable to a computer opens up the internal storage (11MB) and the external storage (2GB) in your PC explorer. The phone comes with a 13-month warranty – and it works. The manufacturers have a very strong presence in Lagos, Kano and Acra.

THE KISS OF ICE

ensphered in the velvelty clouds
upon the divan of our desires and burning fires
lissome lips leaning lingering and limping
for the kiss…

shrouded in the alluvial veil of our ben
entwined merging holding unseparated
two bodies in unison in tune, a merger of dust
coming together for the kiss…

covered in alluvial steamy sweat of storm
the storm of our panting passion pulsating
throbbing against the cells of our fragile bodies
parting, closing for the kiss…

baptised in the renewal of dreams, desires
and drama of unending beginning of passion unfathomable
peering into the void of the space left between
asking, entreating for the kiss…

placed in the coffin of confusion of commitment
lust lost in the dust of distrust
hushing, pushing for the silence that screams
planting the kiss that freezes emotions

you shackle, you manacle
with your kiss of ice.

First Maternal and Neo-natal Health Call Centre in Nigeria

In ESSAY, Uncategorized on September 13, 2011 at 3:09 pm

The Gombe State Government, Society for Family Health (SFH), and Population Services International (PSI), through the support of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is piloting the first Maternal and Neo-natal Health Call Centre (Hotline) in Nigeria.  The commissioning of the call center was held last year at the Specialist Hospital in the heart of the capital city of Gombe.

The Call Centre will provide information to both providers and the public on MNH care, provide linkages to facilities for emergency care, and connect transport workers with women and neonates that require immediate transport for expert care at referral health facilities.

The goal of the Maternal and Neonatal Health Care Project (tagged Inganta Rayuwar Iyali in Hausa, and the Motherhood Support Project, in English) is to demonstrate effective and scalable approaches to improving critical Maternal and Neonatal Health (MNH) practices in the home and position successful approaches for scale up.   This project is a two year project (2009-2011) being implemented throughout Gombe State.

The project has four key objectives: To test three models to improve MNH interventions in the home; to improve supply of MNH products available at Patent Proprietary Medicine Vendors (PPMVs) shops and improve their ability to counsel, recognize complications, and make appropriate referrals; to set up a call centre/MNH hotline to assist health providers and families to manage issues in the home, and to provide referrals and emergency transport assistance; to build key stakeholder buy-in and develop a strategy for scale up of successful approaches.
